Kathy H. narrates from adulthood, looking back on Hailsham, the boarding school where she grew up alongside her closest friends Ruth and Tommy in what reads, at first, like an ordinary English childhood. Kazuo Ishiguro lets the truth about Hailsham surface gradually rather than all at once — what the school was really for, and what that means for everyone who passed through it. It’s often read as science fiction, though the technology in it barely registers next to the very human question the novel is actually asking about what makes a life count as a life.
