Etsuko lives a quiet life in England when her memory pulls her back to postwar Nagasaki and a woman named Sachiko, a friend whose relationship with her own young daughter unsettled Etsuko even at the time. Kazuo Ishiguro’s debut novel keeps returning to Etsuko’s own daughter, who died by suicide, without ever directly connecting the two threads — the gap between what Etsuko says and what she’s actually circling is where the novel does its real work. It’s a quieter, more oblique book than his later fiction, but it already has the unreliable, withholding narrators he’d become known for.
