الوصف
Masuji Ono spends his retirement in postwar Japan reflecting on a painting career that once put his talent in service of nationalist propaganda, at a time when the country is busy rebuilding and would rather not dwell on what men like him did during the war. Kazuo Ishiguro gives Ono a narrating voice that keeps softening its own history, and the gap between what Ono admits and what actually happened is where the novel’s real tension sits. It’s an early, quieter demonstration of the unreliable narrator Ishiguro would later use to even greater effect in The Remains of the Day.
