Mowgli grows up among the wolves of the Seeonee hills after being found as an abandoned infant, raised under the law of the jungle and mentored by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther. Rudyard Kipling built the stories around Shere Khan, the tiger who’s wanted Mowgli dead since he was a cub, and around the code the jungle’s animals live by, which the human world outside keeps failing to match. First published in 1894, it’s stayed in print continuously since, reshaped by more film and stage adaptations than almost any other children’s classic.
