الوصف
Marlow captains a steamboat up the Congo River on a job that’s ostensibly about ivory, but the real cargo of the novel is what he finds waiting for him: Kurtz, a once-idealistic trader who’s disappeared into the deep interior and, by every account reaching Marlow, disappeared into something considerably darker along with it. Joseph Conrad wrote Heart of Darkness as a direct indictment of European colonial brutality in the Congo, dressed as an adventure story, and its famous ambiguity about where exactly the darkness in the title is located — the jungle, or the men claiming to civilize it — has kept it argued over for over a century.
