Charles Dickens

Victorian English novelist, social chronicler and creator of indelible characters

Vivid caricatures, foggy London streets and an unsparing gaze at Victorian institutional neglect define the fiction of Charles Dickens. Born in Portsmouth in 1812, Dickens experienced childhood poverty and factory labor when his father was imprisoned for debt, an ordeal that fueled his lifelong advocacy for children and the impoverished. In Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, he traces young protagonists fighting through orphanages, criminal underworlds and shifting fortunes. A Christmas Carol captured popular imagination with its seasonal morality tale, while A Tale of Two Cities dramatizes revolutionary turmoil in Paris and London. Dickens died in 1870, leaving behind stories that remain landmarks of nineteenth-century literature.
