1964. Helen Hansford is an art therapist at a psychiatric hospital in Croydon. Her life is quiet and somewhat stuck, defined by a long-term affair with a married colleague. Everything changes when a new patient arrives: William Tapping, a man who has not spoken or left his house for thirty years. He was discovered in a derelict house, living in the shadows of his past.As Helen begins to work with William, helping him find his voice through painting, she finds herself drawn into the mystery of his seclusion. At the same time, her own life begins to unravel as she questions the choices she has made. Inspired by a true story, Shy Creatures is a beautifully written, compassionate novel about the people who fall through the cracks of society and the courage it takes to step back into the light. It explores themes of isolation, the healing power of art, and the complexity of human connection.
