Description
In Brooklyn, retired Baghdadi doctor Sami is gradually losing his grounding in the present as he sinks deeper into the advanced stages of dementia. Forced to flee his beloved Iraq following the devastation of the 2003 Gulf War and sectarian cleansing by militias, his fracturing mind transforms into a poignant dreamscape where old memories, sensory triggers, and fragments of classical Arabic poetry constantly bleed together.
While Sami struggles to hold onto his disappearing past, a young Iraqi immigrant named Omar arrives alone in New York carrying a completely opposite burden. Having escaped Saddam Hussein’s military, Omar was brutally branded a deserter—punished by having his ear severed. He operates under a fabricated identity, working low-wage, menial kitchen jobs while desperately seeking to completely erase his past, achieve a normal life, and earn enough money for reconstructive surgery.
