Description
Lyrics Alley presents a sweeping and profoundly evocative historical novel set against the turbulent backdrop of 1950s Sudan as the nation stands on the precipice of independence from British colonial rule. The narrative centers on the powerful and affluent Abuzeid family, whose traditional patriarch, Mahmoud Bey, rules his divided household with an iron will. His brilliant and deeply promising son, Nur, is poised to inherit the family empire and marry his beloved cousin, Soraya.
However, a catastrophic diving accident leaves Nur completely paralyzed, shattering his future prospects and overturning his family’s grand ambitions. In the wake of this tragedy, Nur finds an unexpected salvation through the power of language, channeling his profound grief, physical limitations, and enduring resilience into beautiful poetry that captures the heart of a changing nation. Leila Aboulela masterfully weaves a rich tapestry of love, cultural conflict, political transformation, and personal redemption, delivering a deeply moving exploration of human resilience and the transformative nature of art.
