الوصف
Francie Nolan is a sharp, book-loving girl growing up in the tenements of early twentieth-century Brooklyn, where her mother Katie holds the family together through sheer relentlessness and her father Johnny holds it together, when he does, through charm that his drinking keeps undercutting. Betty Smith drew heavily on her own childhood for the novel, and the specificity of that memory — what it actually felt like to be poor in that particular place at that particular time — is what’s kept the book in print since 1943 rather than any single dramatic turn in its plot.
