Tahereh Mafi

Iranian-American novelist of lyrical young-adult fantasy and dystopian fiction

Poetic imagery, emotionally heightened narration and themes of sensory isolation define the young adult fiction of Tahereh Mafi. Born in Connecticut in 1988 to Iranian immigrants, Mafi drew widespread attention with her dystopian debut, Shatter Me, which chronicles Juliette Ferrars, a young woman whose touch proves fatal and who must navigate imprisonment, rebellion and romance. The series expands through titles such as Unravel Me and Ignite Me, exploring bodily autonomy and political revolution. In This Woven Kingdom, inspired by Persian mythology and the epic Shahnameh, Mafi shifts into courtly romance and divine intrigue. Readers eager for high emotional stakes and atmospheric worldbuilding can begin with Shatter Me or This Woven Kingdom.
