Sally Rooney

Irish novelist of contemporary relationships, social power dynamics and intimate communication

Precise dialogue, modern intimacy and the subtle power dynamics of youth and class define the critically celebrated fiction of Sally Rooney. Born in Castlebar, Ireland, in 1991, Rooney was a university debating champion before her 2017 debut novel Conversations with Friends marked her as a distinctive new literary voice. Her acclaimed sophomore novel, Normal People, won the Costa Novel Award and Irish Book of the Year, tracing the complex, on-and-off relationship between Marianne and Connell across their school and university years. Later novels like Beautiful World, Where Are You and Intermezzo further explore artistic purpose, brotherhood and grief. Readers should begin with Normal People.
