Rachel Renee Russell

American author, illustrator and creator of the Dork Diaries series

Illustrated diary entries, comic self-deprecation and the awkward social hurdles of middle school shape the humorous fiction of Rachel Renee Russell. Born in Michigan in 1959, Russell practiced consumer law before turning to children’s literature, drawing heavily on the real school experiences of her two daughters, who also assist with illustration and writing. Her signature series, Dork Diaries, centers on fourteen-year-old Nikki Maxwell navigating friendships, crush dramas and school rivalries through candid journal doodles. In 2013, Dork Diaries received the Children’s Choice Book Award for Book of the Year. Spinoff adventures like The Misadventures of Max Crumbly offer similar illustrated laughs for readers transitioning into chapter books.
