Paulo Coelho

Brazilian novelist of spiritual parables, destiny and the pursuit of dreams

Desert pilgrimages, mystical omens and the courageous pursuit of personal destiny illuminate the philosophical fiction of Paulo Coelho. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, Coelho survived psychiatric confinement and political imprisonment under Brazil's military dictatorship, later walking the five-hundred-mile Road to Santiago pilgrimage that inspired his literary vocation. His international masterpiece, The Alchemist, has been translated into over eighty languages, inspiring millions with its poetic fable of an Andalusian shepherd searching for worldly treasure. Works such as The Pilgrimage, Eleven Minutes, The Archer and Veronika Decides to Die blend lyricism with universal spiritual wisdom. Readers seeking philosophical transformation should begin with The Alchemist.
