Maggie O'Farrell

British-Irish novelist of psychological intimacy, family grief and historical fiction

Lyrical prose, sensory intimacy and an evocative exploration of private grief distinguish the fiction of Maggie O'Farrell. Born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, in 1972 and raised in Wales and Scotland, O'Farrell worked as an arts journalist before publishing her debut novel After You’d Gone in 2000. Her work frequently investigates family secrets, unvoiced traumas and forgotten historical women. Her 2020 novel Hamnet, reimagining the brief life of Shakespeare’s young son and the grief of his wife Agnes, won the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award. In The Marriage Portrait, she turns to Renaissance Italy and Duchess Lucrezia de' Medici. Readers discovering O'Farrell’s work can begin with Hamnet.
