J. K. Rowling

British author and creator of Harry Potter

J. K. Rowling builds the Harry Potter stories around a hidden magical world that grows more complex as its young characters get older. Born in 1965, she published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997, introducing Harry, Ron and Hermione and their life at Hogwarts. The seven-book sequence follows their friendships alongside a widening conflict, ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rowling has also written companion books connected with the wizarding world and children's fiction outside it, including The Ickabog and The Christmas Pig. These offer different starting points for readers approaching her work.
