Holly Black

American author of dark YA fantasy, treacherous fae courts and folklore

Treacherous faerie courts, political betrayal and fierce mortal survival shape the dark fantasy fiction of Holly Black. Born in New Jersey in 1971, Black grew up immersed in folklore and ghost stories before publishing her debut Tithe in 2002. She established herself as a master of modern fae mythology with The Folk of the Air trilogy, beginning with The Cruel Prince, which follows mortal Jude Duarte navigating the ruthless courts of Elfhame alongside wicked prince Cardan. Her books avoid romanticized fairy tales, emphasizing instead the peril, bargains and shifting loyalties of magical realms. In 2014, she received a Newbery Honor for Doll Bones. Readers entering Elfhame should begin with The Cruel Prince.
