Fyodor Dostoevsky

Russian literary titan of psychological realism, moral anguish and spiritual redemption

Feverish moral interrogations, psychological torment and the search for spiritual redemption define the towering fiction of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Born in Moscow in 1821, Dostoevsky endured mock execution, Siberian penal servitude and chronic epilepsy, experiences that deepened his unsparing portraits of the human psyche. Masterworks such as Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground and The Brothers Karamazov explore guilt, free will and ideological extremism with revolutionary intensity, while The Idiot captures the tragedy of innocent goodness in a corrupt society. Dostoevsky transformed the modern novel into an arena of profound philosophical debate. Readers discovering his profound psychological realism often start with Crime and Punishment or Notes from Underground.
