Elif Shafak

Turkish-British novelist of cross-cultural Sufism, Istanbul history and feminine resilience

Sufi mysticism, multicultural heritage and the forgotten narratives of marginalized women shape the multilingual fiction of Elif Shafak. Born in Strasbourg in 1971 to Turkish diplomats, Shafak lived across Europe and Turkey before settling in London, holding a doctorate in political science. Her landmark English novel The Forty Rules of Love interweaves the thirteenth-century companionship of Rumi and Shams of Tabriz with a modern woman's spiritual awakening. Works such as The Bastard of Istanbul, The Island of Missing Trees and There Are Rivers in the Sky investigate ecological memory, national taboos and cultural pluralism. Shafak is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Readers can begin with The Forty Rules of Love.
