Dav Pilkey

American author and illustrator of Dog Man and Captain Underpants

Dav Pilkey gives comics, wordplay and gloriously ridiculous situations a central role in children's reading. Born in 1966, he writes and illustrates Captain Underpants and Dog Man, mixing visual jokes with stories about friendship, mistakes and trying again. The Captain Underpants books introduce George and Harold, whose own comic-making becomes part of the fiction; Dog Man develops that playful relationship between drawings and storytelling. Pilkey's work also includes picture books. The Paperboy received a Caldecott Honor in 1997, offering a quieter introduction to an artist often associated with energetic comic adventures.
