Charlotte Brontë

English novelist of fierce moral independence, gothic romance and passionate inner life

Windswept Yorkshire moors, fierce feminine self-reliance and psychological intensity define the revolutionary fiction of Charlotte Brontë. Born in 1816 at the parsonage in Haworth, Brontë overcame poverty and family tragedy, initially publishing under the male pseudonym Currer Bell. Her 1847 masterpiece, Jane Eyre, shattered Victorian conventions by presenting an orphaned governess who demands moral equality, autonomy and emotional honesty in her love for the brooding Mr. Rochester. Brontë's later novels, including Villette and Shirley, further explore loneliness, vocational frustration and the inner lives of independent women. Readers discovering classic English literature should begin with the timeless power of Jane Eyre.
