Agatha Christie

English Queen of Crime, creator of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple

Ingenious misdirection, locked-room puzzles and psychological investigations into human motives establish Agatha Christie as the preeminent architect of Golden Age detective fiction. Born in Devon in 1890, Christie served as a nurse and pharmacy dispenser during World War I, acquiring a detailed knowledge of poisons that informed her plots. She introduced Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in The Mysterious Affair at Styles and later created the intuitive spinster sleuth Miss Jane Marple. Masterpieces such as The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None set enduring benchmarks for mystery writing. Christie died in 1976. Newcomers can begin with And Then There Were None or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
