Haruki Murakami

Japanese novelist of magical realism, urban loneliness and surreal mystery

Subterranean passages, talking cats and jazz-inflected musings on modern isolation characterize the surreal fiction of Haruki Murakami. Born in Kyoto in 1949, Murakami ran a Tokyo jazz club with his wife before turning to writing, crafting stories that blend Western cultural touchstones with Japanese post-war melancholy. His breakthrough realistic novel Norwegian Wood established his international reputation, while landmark works like Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and 1Q84 dissolve boundaries between waking reality and subconscious dream worlds. Murakami received the Franz Kafka Prize in 2006 and the Jerusalem Prize in 2009. Readers discovering his haunting fiction can begin with the emotional realism of Norwegian Wood or the surreal mystery of After Dark.
