Stephen King

American master of psychological horror, supernatural suspense and small-town dread

Everyday American towns haunted by deep-seated terrors, childhood grief and uncanny supernatural forces form the backbone of Stephen King’s vast body of work. Born in Portland, Maine, in 1947, King draws heavily on his New England upbringing to ground cosmic dread in relatable domestic reality. Breakthrough novels like Carrie and The Shining transformed modern horror by blending paranormal occurrences with domestic disintegration, while Misery and The Green Mile explore captivity and moral cruelty. King received the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2003. Readers exploring his storytelling can start with the psychological suspense of Misery or the epic horror of It.
