Jane Austen

English novelist of Regency manners, social irony and domestic life

Keen social satire, lively dialogue and an enduring critique of financial dependence shape Jane Austen’s classic novels. Born in Hampshire in 1775, Austen lived largely within quiet rural communities, observing the social rituals and marriage negotiations of the English gentry with sharp psychological insight. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy navigate misunderstanding and personal growth, while Sense and Sensibility contrasts emotional restraint with impulsive passion. Novels like Emma and Persuasion further explore moral self-delusion and second chances. Austen published her major works anonymously during her lifetime, dying in Winchester in 1817. Her witty prose remains an ideal entry into nineteenth-century literature.
