الوصف
Ulrich, the man of the title, lives in Vienna in the last years before the First World War with a deliberate refusal to settle into any single identity, profession, or belief — he treats every possibility as equally valid and therefore commits to none of them. Robert Musil uses Ulrich’s drift to satirize an empire doing much the same thing on a civilizational scale, sleepwalking toward collapse while congratulating itself on its stability. Musil never finished the novel before his death, and its scale and complexity have made it as much a landmark of unfinished modernism as of Austrian literature.
